All societies – including the most peaceful; especially the most peaceful – have understood the necessity of codes of conduct, which are nothing more than behavioral norms. All serious organizations have codes of conduct by which people are meant to abide. The Spanish Anarchists did. So did the IRA. The Freedom Riders had a code of conduct, as did Nat Turner’s fighters. Codes of conduct are even more important in militant resistance movements which have a history of behaving badly. ...

In November, we reported on the fact that more than 50% of the state of Oregon was in “severe,” “extreme,” or “exceptional” drought. This story has barely been mentioned in statewide media. For the past month, data has been unavailable as the Drought.gov website was offline during the government shutdown. Now that the site is back online, data shows that nearly 80% of the state is now in “severe” drought condition or worse. ...

Last week, a member of DGR Eugene brought author and radical activist Robert Jensen (no relation to Derrick Jensen) to town to give a talk titled “Patriarchy: Left, Right, and Center.” Video of the talk can be found here. The audio isn’t great, but improves partway through the talk. It is listenable throughout. In his talk, Jensen outlined how all wings of modern US American culture is patriarchal. He discusses industrial collapse, pornography, prostitution, gender, male violence, fascism, and resistance. ...

The US drought monitor (most recently updated November 13th) shows that 51.9% of Oregon’s land mass is in “severe drought,” with 34.3% in “extreme drought” characterized by major crop/pasture losses, and widespread water shortages or restrictions. This news comes as California battles extreme November wildfires. Eugene had 15 inches of rain less than normal during the last “water year” (October 1st, 2017 to September 30th, 2018). As PSMag notes, “The Oregon drought this year is most striking because it covers many coastal areas known historically as some of the wettest in the country… ‘We have a pretty severe drought here in Oregon right now, partially due to the low snowpack last year, which really set the ball into motion,’ said Kathie Dello, associate director of the Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon State University. ‘Now we’re into the rainy season, and it’s not raining.’ That low snowpack was due, in part, to higher temperatures. Portland, for instance, saw its hottest year in recorded history, with more days above 90 degrees than ever before.” ...

On Friday, September 7th, Deep Green Resistance member Max Wilbert was contacted by the FBI in regards to his political organizing. The agent, who identified himself as “Special Agent Michael” from the Seattle Field Office of the FBI, said he was calling “about something [Wilbert] wrote online” in response to “tips submitted to a public tip line.” The same agent also left a card at a family member’s house over the weekend. ...

Major news from Nevada. The SNWA water grab has been completely rejected — at least for now. This project has been looming over eastern Nevada for decades. Now there is some space to relax, and to gather strength for the next fight. There are many other issues plaguing this region: pinyon juniper deforestation, mining, overgrazing, energy development, and so on. The land still needs defenders.
