Some good news! They are still restricted to less than 50 miles of streams, but they’re much better established than they were a few decades ago. A big thank you to everyone who worked to help protect these incredible fish. One less species on the brink of extinction — but there is still a long way to go. It’s estimated that industrial civilization drives 200 species extinct EVERY SINGLE DAY. That is why we can’t stop fighting.
The fish was listed as endangered in 1985 due to habitat loss. Recovery efforts have focused on working with landowners to reduce overgrazing and fence livestock out of streams.
