Colorado River lawsuit DGR

First-in-the-Nation Lawsuit Seeks Recognition of Rights for the Colorado River

“Contemporary public concern for protecting nature’s ecological equilibrium should lead to the conferral of standing upon environmental objects to sue for their own preservation.” Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, Sierra Club v. Morton (1972) Denver, Colorado–In a first-in-the-nation lawsuit filed in federal court, the Colorado River is asking for judicial recognition of itself as a “person,” with rights of its own to exist and flourish. The lawsuit, filed against the Governor of Colorado, seeks a recognition that the State of Colorado can be held liable for violating those rights held by the River. ...

Statement on Guy McPherson

We learned recently that Guy McPherson, with whom DGR has collaborated in the past, has been accused by multiple women of sexually predatory behavior. We have seen screenshots of comments where he calls women vile names (e.g., he calls one woman a “cum-gargling whore”). These accusations have been corroborated from several sources. At the time we collaborated with Guy McPherson, we had no idea that he was treating women so poorly. Deep Green Resistance has an absolute zero-tolerance policy for abuse and will stand against any predators being allowed access to the movement or anyone who could be harmed. Our hearts go out to his victims. ...

This War Has Two Sides: Shifting The Environmental Movement from Defense to Offense

Here’s a flashback from the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference in 2016. In this talk, Deep Green Resistance members Jonah Mix and Dillon Thomson speak on the failure of the contemporary environmental movement to meaningfully stop the destruction of the planet. Using examples from past and current resistance movements, Mix and Thomson chart a more serious, strategic path forward that takes into account the urgency and direness of the ecological crises we face. It is time to resist. ...

"Full of Inspiration": 2017 Direct Action Training Report-Back

Over Earth Day weekend, Deep Green Resistance members in Oregon hosted an advanced direct action training in rural western Oregon. About 45 people attended from several surrounding states. The training began with several anti-oppression sessions to help foster an equitable and safe environment for facilitators and participants, especially for people of color, women, indigenous people, and members of other oppressed and marginalized groups. These sessions, which included an introduction to radical feminism and a group activity around understanding privilege, aimed to inform the interpersonal dynamic and content of the training. This is also to help facilitate a more inclusive and comfortable organizing experience in our communities. ...

Public Interest Environmental Law Conference 2017

Last weekend, the annual PIELC conference took place here in Eugene, Oregon (USA). Despite the name, this conference draws a wide range of grassroots activists in addition to lawyers. Our local chapter as well as members and close allies from around the region attended. On Friday, two of our members gave a talk critiquing energy efficiency as a solution to environmental problems, and more broadly critiquing technological solutions, capitalism, and civilization. About 30 people attended and the Q&A period was good. ...

Firearms Training for Revolutionaries and Activists

“What do we do in the face of this horror? Do we sit on our hands? Do we lift our hands to god and pray for the Messiah to come? I don’t think he’s coming. What do we do? We use our hands and our arms and our hearts and our lives and our deaths and we fight back, we resist. If you can’t fight, then run. If you can’t run, then hide. But you must resist. Must.” ...
